A Lineage Grows | Home Vineyard
CABERNET SUCCESS
There is something extraordinary unfolding in our Cabernet blocks. Alongside Tom’s original vines, standing on the knoll of our Home Vineyard since 1967, a new generation is coming of age. And what they are delivering is remarkable.
These younger plots trace their pedigree directly to Tom’s first planting. Margaret River’s original mass selection cuttings of Western Australia’s heritage clone, ‘Houghton,’ were procured and planted by Dr Tom Cullity at Vasse Felix. This old vine material arrived in Western Australia in the 1800s. The vines growing alongside Tom’s today descend from that same stock. Now eighteen years old, the finesse and pedigree of that clonal material is announcing itself clearly in the quality of fruit they produce. It is a testament to what this heritage mass selection, faithfully carried forward, can become.
The most recent chapter is our M1 plot, the former Riesling plot, now planted to these same heritage clones. From Tom’s original vision, through every careful planting since, the lineage continues to grow. It is the most exciting story unfolding in our vineyard, and one we look forward to continuing to share with you.
