One of the great wine regions of the world, Margaret River’s truly unique environment makes it a paradise for winemakers and wine lovers alike. The rare combination of a Mediterranean climate, maritime influence and ancient, free draining soils enable distinct and exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to be grown, consistently.
Positioned on a cape, surrounded by ocean on three sides, the region receives cooling sea breezes of an afternoon that moderate the temperature, enabling the grapes extended time to ripen on the vine, while retaining fragile aromatics, flavour compounds and elegance. This maritime influence also supports a low diurnal temperature range, low seasonal variation and mild climate.
The Mediterranean climate features a well-defined warm, dry summer, presenting little-to-no disease pressure in the vineyards. Healthy winter rainfalls encourage replenishment and rejuvenation.
Inherently,
Margaret River

“Margaret River is the closest thing to paradise of any wine region I have visited in my extensive search for knowledge.”

Ancient Soils
The geology is considered amongst the oldest of the Earth’s viticultural regions, surpassing South Africa and Europe. Margaret River Wine, Media Kit (2025). Granite and gneiss rocks are aged between 1,130 and 1,600 million years old, and have eroded into Ironstone gravel (called Forest Grove soils locally). These tough and unfertile soils encourage restrained vine growth and grapes of intensity. Clay and rock bases restrict root growth, moderate vine vigour and store water.

Margaret River sits within one of the world’s 35 Biodiversity Hotspots in the south-west of Australia. These important conservation zones represent just 2.5% of the Earth’s land surface, however, they support more than half of its endemic plant species.
