Earlier this month, vignerons and winemakers from across the Margaret River region assembled in the Vasse Felix Art Gallery to explore the world of Margaret River Chardonnay, tasting unfinished Chardonnay samples from the 2025 vintage, generously contributed by producers throughout the region.

This year, 116 samples were contributed by 45 Margaret River producers for this insightful annual tasting. The event attracted a wonderful turnout of viticulturists and winemakers, providing a great opportunity to share knowledge and experiences.

As in previous tastings, producers were asked to contribute samples that highlight specific site differences, so that everyone can better understand the scope of the region and the quality of our vineyards.

Discussions on the 2025 vintage were led by guest speakers Matt Buchan (Deep Woods Estate) and James Harris (Island Brook), who noted the strength of the 2025 samples, particularly those performing in tank, despite early budburst and uneven growth from weather conditions. Although the vintage was three to four weeks later than average and impacted by bird pressure, they highlighted the absence of disease and a balanced growing cycle.

Once again, oak integration and malolactic fermentation underscored the influence of vineyard conditions on overall wine quality.

Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock concluded with “Today is about us all coming together and sharing. Wine is about community, wine is about enjoying a drink together, growing together, being a small community together and being in the same industry together… I think it's one of the most beautiful industries in the world and it brings so much joy.”
