Tasting Notes
COLOUR Deep red with a vibrant purple hue NOSE Bright raspberry and cranberry fruit characters mingle with underlying graphite and warm stone notes. Subtle hints of sweet earth and potpourri deliver an aromatic lift. PALATE An elegant, pretty palate with fine powdery tannins which complement the lively, red-fruit flavoured core. A hint of wood smoke and biscuit add savoury complexity to the lingering finish.
Winemaker Notes
WINEMAKER'S NOTES Each small section of 2015 Shiraz was vinified and matured separately. Fermentation with 100% natural yeasts, maceration and aeration were combined in such a way as to ensure the gentlest extraction of colour, tannins and the truest expression of fruit. Once again a small percentage was fermented via Carbonic Maceration and finished with wild, full-skins fermentation bringing vivacity and texture to the wine. Following 11 months maturation in new and old French oak barriques, each batch underwent a rigorous appraisal process to identify the best small parcels to come together to make a complex, medium-weight Shiraz.

VINTAGE DESCRIPTION

Mild conditions in Margaret River with no extreme weather conditions, allowing for balanced fruit and a slow and steady intake. There was no disease pressure and fruit quality is excellent the only disappointment was yields being down across the Region for all key varieties. This was the outcome of storms in spring and pressure from an increase in the local population of Silver Eyes (birds) and no Marri Blossom.

The Wine Front - Campbell Mattinson

Everything is in neat order with this Margaret River shiraz. There's not a hair out of place here. The fruit is ripe, the tannin is supple, the spice notes are tucked in neatly and oak has been managed just-so. Acidity is in check too. We move logically and consistently at every point along the palate, the flavours eventually flowing freely through the fine mesh of tannin. Medium-weight red, black and red berries, squeaky clean, done very well. (2015 vintage)

    Ray Jordan's Top 100 Reds

Vasse Felix is best known for its cabernets yet it has some great old-vine shiraz and with the result you get wines like this. Clearly one of the best they have made in a distinguished line of shiraz over the years. Aromatics with dusty savoury plum and a sprinkle of earth with grainy chewy tannins balancing the fruit. (2014 vintage)

  • Complex and Restrained

Margaret River Shiraz offers gentle fruit characters, a juicy palate and soft, textured tannins with refreshing natural acidity. This is the signature Shiraz of Vasse Felix and made primarily from the Estate's 1967 Shiraz vines.
