2020 Cabernet Sauvignon

The Premier Cabernet Sauvignon of Vasse Felix. This wine’s distinctive style possesses all the hallmarks of the finest Margaret River Cabernet; elegance, power and ageability. Made every year since 1972, it is Margaret River’s archetypal Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting Notes
APPEARANCE Deep ruby with a purple tinge. NOSE Immediately fragrant with elegant cranberry, rose petal. There is incredible, enticing bright forest fruits with deep blackberry and hints of fresh baked bread crust, earthy mushroom, granite stone and steel. PALATE Juicy, intense and luscious on entry with fast building tannin, and incredibly firm, yet super-luscious concentrated raspberry, fresh vanilla pods and a delicious meatiness.
Winemaker Notes
WINEMAKER COMMENTS Our Cabernet parcels are grown in Wilyabrup, (the coastal, mid northern part of Margaret River) on ancient, well drained gravel loam soils to produce a wine of great varietal purity and character. These wonderful, often tiny, vineyard sections are individually fermented using indigenous yeasts, with many experiencing maceration periods of up to 40 days. Natural fermentation and extended maceration are coupled with traditional oxidative handling to clearly define the intricate personality of each vineyard site before blending. This was a cool but bright fruit vintage with super fine tannin ripening and very low yield where only a small make was made in this ultimate premier form. Malbec remains an important component with our Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot is becoming a valuable contributor from our Wilyabrup soils.

2020

2020 was a stunning vintage that will define ‘rare and fine’ with low yields and fantastic quality. Spring development was early, followed by a warm start to summer which continued into fine, sunny and dry conditions throughout the season. Combined with low yields, this brought an early start to harvest. No early bird pressure with timely Marri Blossom and no disease pressure were ideal. The birds arrived after a rainfall event late February and we netted the reds, the conditions also cooled slightly extending the season for ideal tannin ripening and fruit flavour preservation.

    The Real Review - Huon Hooke

    Good depth of red-purple colour and a fresh aroma which leads with leathery oak-derived notes. The tannins create a very drying impression on the palate. There is elegance and impressive intensity here, but also some toughness—that age will almost certainly soften. There is a core of dark fruit—blackberry and mulberry—that emerges the more you work the glass. This is a sleeper, and loaded with latent potential.

    Winepilot - Ray Jordan

    A stylish and elegant expression of this very good Margaret River vintage. The smaller volume and tight berry factor have contributed to the intensity and power on the palate especially. Highly perfumed nose with leafy red berry and blackcurrant and with a trace of bay leaf and black olive. The palate is silky smooth and more in the medium bodied zone. So bright and vibrant with a dry chalky tannin and fine oak support. A classy wine.

    A medium-bodied red with blackcurrants, sage and crushed berries. Fine and medium-round tannins. Creamy texture and clean, fruity finish. Real cabernet character. Drink now or hold. A couple of years would make it even better.

    A marker of great cabernet is being seduced by the aromas and flavours, which need to be in harmony: everything tucked in neatly, and let’s not forget beautiful tannins matched to fine acidity. Does this fall into that class? Too right it does. Varietal flavours are pitch-perfect and not quite understated, this is cabernet after all, and the result is a certain elegance and class. A gorgeous rendition.
