Seems 2016 was a good year for Cabernet Sauvignon in Margaret River. Peppermint chocolate, baking spices, dark fruits, sage. Full-bodied, dark chocolate flavour and grainy tannin, sage, even acidity, fleshy feel, slurry of tannin on a spicy finish of solid length.

The wine is typified by a finer texture of tannins than the Filius, with smaller berries in the vineyard that gets more access to the seabreeze, allowing better preservation of fruit quality. healthy fruitset, better yields due to dry warm spring conditions at the end of 2015. It's perfumed and harmonious, lighter and elegant than previous vintages with chocolate, cassis notes.

The palate, laden with blueberries, red currants and cassis, is beautifully poised and balanced with all of the elements in perfect harmony. The rising gravitas of Margaret River in the grand world of Cabernet cannot be overstated and it is wines like this that set the pace. In exacting varietal definition, depth of character, sheer endurance of graphite-fine tannins, integration of high-class oak and astonishing line and length, I cannot think of anywhere else on the planet that can equal this at this price. This is a monumental release by global standards and deserves a place in every cellar (for at least the next 20 years!)

86% cabernet, 11% malbec, 3% petit verdot fermented naturally in oak before 19 months maturation in 44% new oak, the remainder used. This is reflective of the stride in the step at this estate: less of everything and with that, more drinkability; more energy; finer bones. Textbook: currant, bouquet garni, graphite, pencil lead and dried cigar. Mid-weighted, highly savoury, classically styled and eminently gulpable. But this will age very well. Your choice.

It’s hard to believe that this is Vasse Felix’s middle-tier red, such is its pedigree. With a little Malbec and Petit Verdot in the mix, this Cabernet is classic Margaret River, balancing power and structure with complexity and poise. Evoking the springtime scents of this coastal region, it billows ripe red currents, eucalyptus, sage, beach scrub and sea spray. Set up for aging, tannins are fine and vice-like and the oak is fairly prominent, but all should settle into place with a few more years in bottle.
