2009 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

2009 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

Tasting Notes
COLOUR This wine is a vibrant pale lemon in colour with grass-green tinges. NOSE Ripe passionfruit explodes from the glass, followed by an amazingly complex array of perfumes including lime, oregano, lemon thyme and a hint of wasabi peas. PALATE The intensity and richness of the fruit characters continues onto the palate. Zesty lime excites your tastebuds, with passionfruit, sweet oregano and spiced Chai tea flavours of cinnamon, cloves and vanilla balancing the zingy acid. The crisp acid remains tight and clean to the end, combining beautifully with the subtle influence of toasted French oak.
Winemaker Notes
The dominance of the Sauvignon Blanc, a small percentage of which was fermented and matured in new oak, provides tropical passionfruit aromatics complimented by the citrus notes of Semillon. The complexity of the wine is further enhanced by using various levels of juice clarity and fermenting with specialized yeasts designed to increase the aromatic lift of these two varietals. The proportion of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon which was fermented and matured in new oak provides an amazing complexity to the pure fruit characters, with a delicate influence of very fine grain oak tannins and the unique spicy vanillin characters typical of French barriques.

Vintage Notes
2009

The season started with a very cool spring and consistent rains which slowed the vines development, and we had a rather extended flowering period. January welcomed some lovely sunshine and the beautiful weather remained for the rest of the season, ripening the fruit easily. The Semillon & Sauvignon Blanc fruit displayed vibrant perfumes and a lovely natural acid balance. Flavours were generally a little riper than previous years, with the Semillon showing more lemon and subtle hints of floral characters rather than the thistle that can dominate in some years. The Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc vineyards were picked at slightly lower Baumes than usual in Margaret River, capturing fine aromas, crisp primary fruit flavours and good, clean acid structure.
