2016 Filius Cabernet Merlot

‘Son of’ the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. This regional blend incorporates more opulent fruit from each of the Vasse Felix Vineyards. Generous portions of Merlot contribute to a succulent wine with approachable tannins.

  • Colour

    Vibrant cherry red hue.

Displays a delicate fruit lift, with savoury scented vine leaf, a hint of black olives, liquorice and an underlying loamy earth character.

A very bright and pretty wine on the palate, delivering currant and cherry flavours, while maintaining a perky juiciness that makes for easy drinking and pairs with a range of food. The Cabernet tannins are ever present yet super fine, and supportive of the softer Merlot and Malbec which fill the centre.
  • Winemaker's notes

The individual batches were sent to stainless steel fermentation vessels. Cabernet parcels underwent a suitable duration of maceration so as extract a fine backbone of structural tannins and blackcurrant laden fruit. The Merlot parcels underwent cold pre-fermentation maceration and were pressed off skins early to maintain a soft luscious mouth feel. The resulting wine was matured in fine French oak for 12 months, with incorporation of traditional oxidative handling, to soften and round the tannin profile and add further aroma and flavour complexity.

  • Vintage Description

Moderate spring conditions at the end of 2015 helped establish a healthy fruitset and better yields than the previous two seasons. January temperatures were warm, interrupted by one rainfall event late in the month, great viticulture management, clean, well-trimmed canopies and subsequent warm weather prevented disease risk.

  • 94 points - 2015 vintage
    Halliday Wine Companion
It has all the hallmarks of the warmer part of Margaret River, flavour building relatively early and sustained throughout the length of he palate. Juicy cassis in the cornerstone, but there are notes of dried herbs, blac olive and oak adding complexity and legnth. Screwcap. 14% alc. Rating 94. Drink to 2029.

One of my favourite mainstream Aussie producers. My notes read 'Delicious, elegant, fragrant, velvety - why drink Bordeaux?' Why indeed at this price? Pair with roast lamb.

This blend balances the concentration and structure of dark black fruits with cedary French oak and fine tannins. Rustic, earthy notes entwine with aromatics of pomegranate and cranberry. The bright palate structure shows wonderful herbal notes of sage and oregano, a great match for the tarragon in the salsa.

  • 5 Stars - 2014 vintage
This is another great Aussie red, but this time from the Northern parts of the Margaret River. The winery was named after a legendary helmsman Thomas Timothee Vasse who was lost at sea in 1801 and rumored to have lived among the Australian Aboriginals. The winery, established in the late 1960s by Dr Tom Cullity, was named Vasse Felix, meaning 'lucky/happy' Vasse. The long hot Aussie summer with consistent, almost rhythmic temperature patterns throughout the ripening season has ensured optimum ripeness and delivered a beautifully rounded blend. The touch of merlot delivers a deep maroon colour and with gorgeous complexities provided by maturation in French oak barriques. With elevated bright perfumes of pomegranate, cassis and a cranberry jelly with rustic earthy tones of native Australian forest and red dust. The enticing complexity shows a touch of tomato leaf, cumin and steamed cedar wood. The palette has a lovely vibrant entrance with fresh juicy fruit, bright acidity, fine tight dry tannins and floral and cranberry nuances. A long, direct palate flows, finishing with savoury notes of sage and dried oregano and some raspberry jelly sweetness.
