2016 Chardonnay

A pure, elegant and vibrant style of Chardonnay, embracing the region's powerful fruit with complexity and restraint to express the environment, with the hallmarks of Vasse Felix's premier vineyards.

  • Colour

Deep straw with a green tinge.

A wealthy, complex perfume of lemon pie crust mingles with hints of pineapple and buttery apple. Subtle secondary notes of nougat, spiced oak and croissant bring depth to the appealing bouquet.

A full bodied palate with a fine structural backbone. Arrives soft and rich with a creamy, broad fruit base. A lovely, fine acid line maintains vibrancy, while wood spice and custard cream flavours extend the long, dry finish.
  • Winemaker's notes

The fruit was hand-harvested and chilled, gently whole-bunch pressed and transferred to French oak barriques as unclarified juice for fermentation with only natural yeasts from the vineyard. We allowed this vintage to undergo Malolactic Fermentation due to its high natural acids, resulting in a softer acidity. Each parcel was left on lees in barrel for 9 months of maturation with battonage.

  • Vintage Description

Moderate spring conditions at the end of 2015 helped establish a healthy fruitset and better yields than the previous two seasons. January temperatures were warm, interrupted by one rainfall event late in the month, great viticulture management, clean, well-trimmed canopies and subsequent warm weather prevented disease risk. White varieties were harvested throughout February with elegant flavours and bright natural acidity.

Thoroughly beautiful expression of Margaret River that shows the continuing evolution for this variety at Vasse Felix. It's restrained and almost delicate, yet there is still all that underlying Margaret River intensity that drives through to the finish.

One of the West's top set of chardonnays, this is the core, middle range flanked by the Filius and the famed Heytesbury. There's a good deal more intensity and drive in the palate here than the Filius, and the purity of the fruit spectrum is mesmerising, aided by a suggestion of lime juice that adds energy to the palate while revealing subtle background oak. A mighty fine chardonnay fan's chardonnay.

The bouquet is still developing, but the palate guarantees the medium to long-term future of a chardonnay with exceptional length and intensity, pear, white peach and grapefruit combining to make light work of the oak. Restrained like a lion on a leash. Screwcap. 13% alc. Rating 96. Drink to 2034. (2015 Vintage)

Fair to say that 'felix' is a good word to describe how we find ourselves in Australia when it comes to Chardonnay. It's very Chardonnay and kind of refined too. Easy to like and enjoy.

Intriguing, offering a fragrant mix of toast, saline and lemon curd flavors that are juicy and focused, with good intensity. Bracing acidity opens up the flavors on the finish, showing transparency and energy. Drink now through 2027. (2015)

Margaret River. Aged in French oak (42% new) for nine months. Clean, powerful, complex and penetrating with bright acidity and minerality. Still carries the elegance and restraint so common with recent vintages out of the Vasse winery.
