We are always evolving and adjusting vineyard and winemaking variables to improve wines within the Vasse Felix Collection. Sometimes there are riskier trials we seek to explore on particular fruit parcels. Science and intuition suggests they may be great advancements; however we have only conventional experience. These trials are broken off from our primary programs. When the results are revolutionary, a small batch is bottled under a Black Label.
NoseThoroughly wild. Reminiscent of sweet earth, ironstone, clove and peppercorn spice. Stewed strawberry and dried muscatel fills the space between the key savoury notes, suggesting a truly fruity core.
PalatePacked with potpourri, turmeric, bitter chocolate, dried orange skin and strawberry jam, flavours explode in the mouth like fireworks. Round and textural, with a satisfying dry, stalky tannin finish - perfect for mopping lingering remnants of a rich meal. Different? Very.
Winemaker's notesSecond vintage of its name, Syrah II was developed as a result of trials with wild fermentation and carbonic maceration. The wine was made with 100% whole bunch carbonic maceration and fermented with only natural yeasts in a small oak vat. It was matured for 11 months in French Oak, unfined and unfiltered. Only a few cases of the wine were bottled for sale.

Vintage DescriptionModerate spring conditions at the end of 2015 helped establish a healthy fruitset and better yields than the previous two seasons. January temperatures were warm, interrupted by one rainfall event late in the month, great viticulture management, clean, well-trimmed canopies and subsequent warm weather prevented disease risk. White varieties were harvested throughout February with elegant flavours and bright natural acidity.
