2015 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon

'Son of' the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. It carries the structure, power and tannins of classic Cabernet in an earlier drinking, more forward style from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards.

  • Colour

    Maroon with a purple tint.

    Nose

A classical savoury Cabernet perfume. Vibrant blackcurrant fruit with gravel earth, hints of venison, mushrooms and truffles mingle with a fine sage-like herbal lift. Fragrant spiced oak notes sit beautifully underneath, delivering a touch of classical cedar.

    Palate

A light entrance leads to juicy fruit with bright acidity, with flavours of blackcurrant and woodsy native forest. Shapely as a Cabernet should be, the power starts to build with a fine tannin profile, leaving a lengthy dry, linear finish.
  • Winemaker's notes

The structural elements of fine Margaret River Cabernet are embraced with a hint of the Malbec's dark fruit to make a classic Vasse Felix style Cabernet Sauvignon. All vineyard sections are fermented separately, accentuating the natural beauty of each parcel of fruit. After 12 months matured in barrique, the Cabernet was blended with the ideal percentage of Malbec to create a savoury fine wine with medium weight, where big is not considered the best.

  • Vintage Description

Mild conditions in Margaret River with no extreme weather conditions, allowing for balanced fruit and a slow and steady intake. There was no disease pressure and fruit quality is excellent the only disappointment was yields being down across the Region for all key varieties. This was the outcome of storms in spring and pressure from an increase in the local population of Silver Eyes (birds) and no Marri Blossom.

A recent blind tasting by four local wine experts pitted a selection of premium WA cabernets against the best from around Australia. Not surprisingly, the local Margaret River drops scored highest, beating their more expensive interstate rivals. The real shock came when the highest-pointed wine was revealed - the lowest-priced in the line-up, the 2014 Vasse Felix Filius. An unbelievable first vintage for this wine and no doubt the best-valued cabernet in Australia. Must-buy.

What a stunning cabernet for the price. This is now the third tier behind the Marg cabernet and the Heytesbury, but in some ways that does it a disservice because it is a good wine.

Filius is the "second label" for Vasse Felix, but there are plenty of winemakers who would be happy to have this as their "first" wine,

The Vasse Felix cabernets are Australian classics, benchmark Margaret River wines at the very pinnacle of what Australia can do. Now the Vasse Felix Heytesbury and Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon, current release 2013, have a baby brother in the 2014 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon. Designed as a more approachable, less-demanding sibling this offers immediate drinking pleasure at a very reasonable price. It still has the great fruit and savoury notes but without the structure that sometimes demands years in the cellar. I loved this wine, which also has a smidgen of malbec and petit verdot in the mix, for its fruit forwardness (nearly all the oak used is older barrels) inkiness, balance and value. Great work from winemaker Virginia Willcock.

Entry level Cabernet from Vasse Felix. Dusty gum leaf and gravel perfume, baking spices, and a mix of red and black berries. Medium bodied, again firm and dusty, subdued yet flavoursome, excellent bone structure and a lovely mouth-perfume, and a clean long finish. Trim and fresh, and very pleasant to drink.

Margaret River. Aged for 12 months in 13% new French oak. Blend of cabernet (87%) and malbec (13%). The dark malbec fruit embraces the classic structural elements of fine Margaret River cabernet to produce an earlier-drinking wine. The fruit, sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards, is rich and dense and already packing a serious punch.

    2015 Filius Cabernet Merlot

This wine comes from the northern part of Margaret River where optimal ripeness is assured. Maturation in French oak barriques provides complexity to this generous, elegant and structured wine. The dry tannin structure of Cabernet Sauvignon is mellowed by the soft generous body of Merlot. A small amount of Malbec accentuates both varieties providing depth of colour, aroma, flavour and structure.
